Paver Patios & Retaining Walls Built to Last

Most patios we build in Iredell and north Mecklenburg land between $14 and $24 per square foot installed. A 300-square-foot patio — a common size for a grill area and a table for six — usually runs $4,200 to $7,200. The spread is not a negotiating tactic; it comes from four things, and we price each one openly on the quote.

• The paver you pick. A standard concrete paver sits at the bottom of the range. Tumbled, thicker or large-format units cost more per square foot and take longer to lay.
• How much dirt has to move. A flat backyard is straightforward. A slope means excavation, hauling and often a wall to hold the grade, and that is where budgets move most.
• Access. If a skid steer can reach the back yard, the base goes in fast. If everything moves by wheelbarrow through a narrow gate, labour goes up and we say so before you sign.
• What the water is doing. If the patio sits where water already collects, drainage has to be solved first. Skipping it is the single most expensive mistake on this list.

Retaining walls price by face area rather than footprint, generally $28 to $45 per square foot of exposed wall. Anything over four feet tall in North Carolina needs an engineered design, which we will tell you about at the estimate rather than after the dig.

Nearly every sunken, wavy or weed-filled patio we are asked to repair failed underneath, not on top. The pavers were fine. What was under them was not. Our red clay holds water, and water in a poorly built base freezes, lifts and settles — which is why a patio can look perfect for one summer and be visibly wrong by the second spring.

On a standard patio we excavate six to eight inches below finished grade, deeper for a driveway. We lay geotextile fabric over the subgrade so the clay below and the stone above never mix, then build the base in compacted lifts of crushed aggregate rather than one thick pour, because a single deep layer cannot be compacted all the way through. A one-inch bedding course is screeded level, pavers are laid and cut, edge restraint is pinned along every open edge, and polymeric sand is swept into the joints and set with water.

Every surface is pitched to drain, roughly a quarter inch per foot away from the house. A patio that holds water is not a cosmetic problem; it is a foundation problem waiting to happen.

A typical 300 to 400 square foot patio takes three to five working days on site: one for excavation and base, one to two for laying and cutting, and a final day for edging, sand, compaction and cleanup. Add two to four days if a retaining wall is part of the job. Weather moves these dates — we will not lay pavers on a saturated base, and telling you that on Tuesday is better than a patio that settles in October.

On permits and utilities, the rules in our area are consistent enough to state plainly. A ground-level patio generally does not need a building permit in Iredell County or the Mooresville, Troutman and Statesville jurisdictions, though your HOA may still want to see a plan. A retaining wall over four feet does need one, along with an engineered design. NC 811 is called before every dig, at no cost to you and without exception — it is free, it is the law, and a struck gas line is not a story anyone wants.

If your property sits inside a Lake Norman shoreline buffer, work near the water carries its own restrictions. We check that before quoting rather than after.

Concrete pavers are what most Lake Norman patios should be. They flex with the freeze-thaw cycle instead of cracking, an individual unit can be lifted and replaced years later, and the colour range is wide. Travertine is cooler underfoot and is the better choice around a pool, at a higher cost and with more care needed in winter. Poured concrete is cheapest per square foot and the fastest to install, but it will crack eventually in our clay, and a crack in a slab is a repair you can see forever.

For walls, segmental block is the workhorse and is what most jobs get. Natural stone costs more and looks like it belongs on the property rather than delivered to it. We will tell you which one the site actually calls for, including when the cheaper answer is the right one.
